You can install a fireplace or wood stove yourself as long as you comply with building regulations. You can also choose to outsorce the installation to a professional (in the UK this means HETAS approved). Usually, you will have to pay for two people for four or five hours. This then includes preparation, transport etc. The installation job at a customer's residence can take as little as two hours, or it can take a whole day. This depends on how big the project is and the type of fireplace or wood stove that is being installed.
Many dealers offer to remove your old fireplace or wood stove for you, In Norway often old wood stoves are sent back to Jøtul to be melted down and turned into new, modern fireplaces and wood stoves. It can be a good idea to bring a photo of the old wood stove or fire place when you go to the shop, and they will give you a rough estimate of what it will cost to remove the old installation.
Sometimes the old chimney is in poor condition and needs rehabilitation. You have to apply to you local autorities to carry out rehabilitation of the chimney. Alternatively, you can install a steel chimney. They can easily be installed later in most houses and cabins.
In Norway, all installations should be approved by a competent person. Professional dealers also offer an approval of the installation and send a report to the local chimney sweep association. This is to be done before you start using the wood stove or fireplace. They also offer to help with service and maintenance as well as guidance on how to get the best heating result for your needs.
